Effective Time Management in the Home Office

Since you work from home, you obviously have time to complete every single project on your to-do list. In a perfect world, this would be a true statement. Since the world and the world of working at home are not perfect, effective time management is your friend when you want to be productive. The wonderful part of having a job that allows you to work at home is the fact that you can choose when you want to work. You are the only person who is responsible for your schedule, and you have all of the control when it comes to creating your workday.

Plan Your Working Day

Planning is the key to a great working schedule. Plan your day from start to finish. Balancing your working life and your family life is not an easy task. Having a good schedule can keep you on track when you start to wander off of the path. Your schedule is probably pretty flexible since you do not have the 9 to 5 daily grind to work around. The scheduling issue that becomes important when you work at home is how you will balance work with home life. You will need separate hours for your working projects to allow you to make a distinction between job work and house work. It might seem like a good idea to complete all of your job assignments late at night or very early in the morning, but this can make it tough to schedule meetings and maintain a standard office. If your job does not require you to have meetings, or if those meetings are extremely flexible, you can skip the office hours. Most people who work at home still have to attend some sort of meeting on a weekly or monthly basis. If you have that type of job, schedule 40 your working hours to coincide with the rest of the world’s workday.
Working while everyone else is working could feel restrictive. You might have chosen to work from home because you are unable to keep that standard workday schedule. If this is true, you will still need to schedule at least one day to work like the rest of the world. This gives you the opportunity to touch base with your colleagues who remain committed to the office world. It also allows you to take phone calls, return emails, and answer questions within the standard working day. Bending your schedule to fit the working world will give you the benefit of being available for those business meetings.

Allocate and Designate

You will need to allocate parts of your day to working on your job. You will also need to allocate hours for taking care of the family, cooking meals and running errands. Make sure to include everything that you want to accomplish on a daily basis, and you will not feel as if you are not making progress. Designate a helper at home. If you have children, you can teach them how to complete certain chores so that you can remove those chores from your daily to-do list. Designating an assignment is a standard operation in the working world, so it should also be a standard operation in your work at home world. Sharing chores with the family is beneficial to you and to the children, so do not be afraid to share your duties. Learning how to wash dishes has never hurt any child.
Designating certain work activities can also be fun for the family. If you have to collect a series 41 of photographs for your assignment, then let the children help. You will be surprised at how much they enjoy helping, and at how much pressure is removed from you when the kids are involved in your work. Small tasks, like organizing the working area, can also be delegated. You do not have to be the one who accomplishes every single item on the to-do list. You do have to be the one responsible for seeing that everything is accomplished. Remember that you are your own boss, and the boss of your helpers.

Choose Your Productive Moments

If you are a night-owl who never accomplishes anything before noon, schedule your work
accordingly. Use the hours in which you are most productive as the base for your working day. If you set your alarm for 4 a.m. and accomplish something before the rest of the family awakens, your workday might need to be split into sections. Work from 4 until the children leave for school, and then see when you are motivated to work again. Picking your most productive working time is a luxury that you should take advantage of when you work from home. No everyone has the opportunity to be at their best while they work, but you do have this opportunity.

Break Time

Schedule your breaks. You need to take time to do something other than work during the day. If you were working in a large corporation, those breaks would be scheduled for you. Your vacation time would need to be used or might possibly be lost. You must remember that working 42 at home does not mean that you should not take breaks. You need to enjoy your working day to be at your very best. Taking a break might mean taking a walk for half an hour. It might mean heading out of the house for a jog, walking the dog, or even washing your car. Regardless of what you do for your break make sure to take one. Exercise breaks are great for your body and your mind, so if you can fit an exercise break into your schedule you can actually combine health and happiness.

Working at home is a balancing act. It is not easy to combine all of the most difficult parts of having a job with all of the most difficult parts of having a household and family. You have to be a professional to work from home, even if you are working in your pajamas.
